It's a rather slow Money Monday here at the blog. I don't plan on making any drugstore trips this week, but there is a fantastic deal on Ball Park franks at Kroger. They're on sale 2 8-packs/$4, and when you buy $10 you get $2 back in Kroger money. Not too shabby! Especially if you have some hungry basketball players to feed!

MrsDrPoe: Kroger and Target Deals, 7/18
I'd like to conclude Money Monday with some deals I came across today while picking up dog food and groceries.
Kroger:
The mega event from last week is still going on at your neighborhood Kroger. You can see all the deals here; I was particularly excited about 28 oz cans of Kroger tomatoes for $0.59 cents. They make great salsa!
Target:
I went here to pick up some food for Monster because it was on sale. While walking down an aisle, I saw a lady with a cart FULL of water guns; I thought to myself, "There's a clearance aisle with some good deals on it!" So I found the aisle where summer items were 80% off- water guns ($0.79), sidewalk chalk ($0.59), red plastic bowls ($0.79), aluminum water bottles ($0.99), and plastic drink dispensers ($1.19). Aside from the clearance aisle, I also found a good deal on Ziploc containers with a printable coupon on Target's website...and there's even more deals here.

MrsDrPoe: A Beginners Guide to Couponing, Part 6
Although there is one more major drug store that we have yet to discuss (Rite Aid), I only recently moved to a place that had one. Consequently, I feel inadequate to go into much detail about its ins and outs, so we will resume the discussion of the drugstore game at a later date. Instead we will move on to my favorite grocery store:
Kroger
Initiation
In order to take advantage of any sale going on at Kroger, you must obtain a Kroger card:
You may do this when you first walk in the store at the customer service desk, which is typically located at the front of the building.
Preparation
As before any shopping trip, I look to Jenny to tell me what sales are going on and what coupons I can match with them. Occasionally, sale prices that Jenny lists differ slightly from those at my store due to different pricing in different regions; however, I use Jenny's prices as a guide for any items not listed in the weekly sales flyer on the Kroger website.
In addition to the typical paper coupons that I cut from the newspaper or print from the internet, there are digital coupons that can put on a Kroger card. There are various websites where these coupons can be loaded (cellfire.com, shortcuts.com, kroger.com, upromise.com, to name a few). When you use your Kroger card and purchase the appropriate item(s), these coupons are automatically deducted from your purchase. Note that you cannot use a digital manufacturer coupon with a paper manufacturer coupon; furthermore, the digital coupon loaded onto your card will ALWAYS be used (you cannot choose to use a better paper one), and they will NOT be doubled. Paper coupons will be doubled (up to a certain value) at Kroger; check your store's policy to see what this value is for you. And as always, you can use one manufacturer and one store coupon on a single item.
B1G1 free sales at Kroger (or any other grocery store) can be misleading; these items are simply reduced in price by half. You do not need to purchase two items to see the savings...but you can if you want to. Often there are no limit to the number of items you purchase at Kroger; however, you should always pay attention to the fine print to be sure, especially with products like milk and soft drinks.
Kroger will sometimes have Catalina deals (Jenny also keeps track of these). These are sales where, if you purchase the appropriate item(s), Kroger money will print out at the register. My favorite Kroger deal, however, is what they call a "Mega Event." Typically these events run for two weeks and are centered around a sporting event (March Madness, Indy 500) or a new movie (Cars 2). To take advantage of these deals, you will usually have to buy 5-10 items on a list; then you will automatically receive $3-$5 off your total purchase when you check out. Again there are usually no limits, so for example, if you would receive $5 off the purchase of 10 items, as long as you had y*10 items, you would get y*$5 off at checkout (i.e. $15 for 30 items).
Implementation
When I get to the store, I do my shopping, gathering items from my list, just like normal. One "different" thing that many folks find helpful if a mega event is going on is to bring in reusable bags. Then fill each with the required number of items for the mega event; this helps you to make sure you have the correct number of items. When I've finished my shopping, I'll double check the number and types of items I've picked up, as well as the coupons I had planned to use. Finally, I proceed to the checkout line.
I will place my items on the belt and have the cashier scan my Kroger card. As he/she scans my items, I try to watch the prices on the screen to make sure everything rings up correctly. After he/she is finished, I give any paper coupons I have and any catalinas from previous deals; then I pay the balance.
Kroger receipts give you a nice breakdown of your savings from both sales and coupons. They also track the number of gas points you earn per purchase:
You can use these points to get a discount on gas at the Kroger gas station or participating Shell stations in your area. Any catalinas you have earned through your purchase will print out seperately from your receipt, like at Wags. These typically have a two-week from the date of purchase expiration date.

MrsDrPoe: A Beginners Guide to Couponing, Part I
As I posted earlier today, Mr. Poe and I just became debt free. One of the ways we have been able to eliminate the small about of debt that we had accrued is by couponing. While I am by no means "the" expert on couponing, I am very excited to share with you what I have learned in the past year and a half.
In essence, "couponing" is learning how to match coupons with sales at your local store(s) to get items that you need for the lowest possible price. You can make the transition to savings easier and quicker by laying some ground work before you get started; here are a few things to consider:

- Goals - Why do you want to save money? Are you saving for something big? Something small? Trying to get out of debt? If you take some time to consider your financial goals, it's much easier to stick to your decision to save money (and avoid "impulse buys"). With our debt settled we are now saving for a down payment on a house and for a newer family car.
- Coupons - Where will you get your coupons? There are websites where you can add digital coupons to store savings cards, websites that allow you to print out paper coupons, and Sunday newspaper inserts with coupons. If you decided to purchase newspapers, which paper in your area contains the best coupons? How many will you get? (Several gurus suggest 1 paper per person in your household.) We purchase two papers on Sunday mornings and supplement those with coupons we find online.
- Organization - How will you organize your coupons? How much time can you spare to coupon? Where will you keep your couponing "stash"? We keep the inserts from each Sunday in a single slot of an expandable file folder; loose coupons are kept in a small index card organizer (more on this later). We typically go to 1-3 stores a week, typically on our way to other places, and we keep a very small stash of items in our spare closet.
- Base Price List - What is a "good price" on items? How much are you paying for items that you buy now? By taking the time to make a list of the items you frequently purchase and the prices you regularly buy them at, you'll better recognize when a sale or a coupon or both is actually benefiting you.
- Brand Loyalty - Why do you buy the brands that you buy? Do they really work/taste better? The fewer items you are brand loyal to, the greater savings you can have. Note: Just because you have to use a specific brand of one or more items does not mean that couponing will be no use to you. We will buy the cheapest just about anything.

MrsDrPoe: Kroger Deal, 5/13
Last week, Kroger had a huge meat sale in our area. I got Tyson split chicken breast for $0.99/lb and ground turkey for $1.97/lb:
I spent $8.79 and saved $6.47! Now we can have our Newnan Transit driver over for a meal sometime. ;)
Also, said transit driver and I discovered this weekend that we only have a 3% sales tax on non-prepared food items. Score!

MrsDrPoe: Kroger and Walgreens Deals
Hello hello! Happy Money Monday! Today I have two deals to show...one from my Kroger purchase on Friday:
I purchased 4 loaves of bread, 2 bags of tortilla chips, 3 packages of Knorr flavored Rice Sides, 1 family package of instant vanilla pudding, 1 package reduced fat Chips Ahoy, 2 strawberry 1/3 less fat Philadelphia cream cheese spread, 1 bottle of BBQ sauce, 2 jars of jalapeno peppers, 12 boxes of Ronzoni pasta, 2 cans of crushed tomatoes, 2 ears of corn, 10 yogurt jars, 2 boxes are margarine, and 2.29 pounds of apples. I had 6 coupons for the pasta (making it all free) and 1 coupon for the margarine.
Total before coupon: $86.28
Total saved: $41.84 (~ 49%)
I didn't make any trips to the drugstores myself today, but my good friend let me spend her money for her:
In three transactions she got 2 tubes of toothpaste for $1.21 each, 2 bags of Pampers diapers for $4.63 each, 1 bag of Pampers wipes for $3.20, 1 bottle of Almay mascara for $3.20, 1 bottle of Almay foundation for $11.80 and two packs of candy for $1.01. Pretty good day :).
