MrsDrPoe: Unexpected Thanks

This Foto Friday is not for the faint of heart.  This is Layla's mess that I had to deal with right after breakfast:

This is by far the worst dog mess I've ever had to clean up, but today I was thinking that all these messes are just prepping us for having children.  So, although I never imagined I'd say it, thanks for the messes, Layla and Sasch.

MrsDrPoe: Monster's Christmas Vacation

MrsDrPoe: Sisters

Lou Grantham met Layla and Sascha.  They got along pretty well- as long as Penny wasn't in the room.  How exciting for the girls to have a new doggie friend!

MrsDrPoe: These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things (This Week)

It's Foto Friday here at the blog!  It's been full of sniffles, but the congestion (like the week) is coming to an end.  Today I'd like to share with you a few of our favorite things.

Sasha found a new favorite spot this week when I put her bed under the end-table by the living room window- she gets sun and a comfy spot while avoiding Monster feet:

MrsDrPoe: The Week in Review

It's finally [Foto] Friday!  It's been a long week, and the Poe household is most definitely looking forward to the weekend, but in the meantime, I'd like to share with you some random moments from our week.

When I went to Kroger this week, I saw these wonderful Mums, and I was reminded that fall is right around the corner.  Whenever we are able to purchase a house, I plan to get lots of these (in Maroon of course) to adorn our yard:

Another day I came home from the library, and Sascha was so happy to see me that she started jumping and wriggling on the couch...'peasant Snoosh' was the end result:
 

Last night as the Bulldogs struggled to get it together against LSU, Layla came over to tell Mr. Poe that she was bored with our three-and-out offensive possessions and wanted to go to bed:

 

And finally, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the stores around town.  I love it!

Mr2Poe: Raising Monsters

So you're thinking of getting a Great Dane?


Just some things to consider... It will make huge messes until potty trained. It will cost more money at the beginning for shots and vet visits than smaller dogs. (Most medicines, including heart worm medication, are dosed by the pound. If you get a female for example, I think we paid $250 to get her fixed at around 5 months old.) It will need to be properly trained and trained early. (I spent a lot of time with Layla in order for her to consistently obey commands.) If the dog is too big to control physically, then it is extremely difficult to teach basic "dog etiquette". It needs to learn to behave on a leash early. This is especially important for smaller owners. (We had this problem, but now Mrs. Poe can walk her without issue.)

While these negative aspects exist, don't let them scare you away. I will tell you that I will own a Dane for the rest of my life, Lord willing. She is the most loyal, obedient, friendly, and beautiful dog I have ever seen (I'm not biased at all). She is great with kids, other dogs, and even crabby adults. While training, she was not overly obstinate, and learned very quickly. She is so gentle and sweet, and she gives great hugs - it's just like a big hairy person. That is probably my wife's favorite part of owning Layla. I would definitely recommend purchasing or rescuing a Monster Dog.

Here are some tips that we found useful when raising our Dane:

Ground Rules
-No Danes on furniture
-No Danes on beds
-No Dane mouthing (She can put your whole hand in her mouth)
-No unauthorized Dane barking (it's loud)

These rules were beneficial for several reasons. We wanted a people friendly environment, and most people aren't used to really large dogs. This keeps Layla from thinking she is everyone's lap dog, and makes our house an inviting place to visit, even to those who aren't dog lovers like us.

Training
-After shots, it is best to socialize him/her with other dogs
----Danes can have dominance issues with other dogs
----This is more prominent with males
-Crate training our Dane made it easier
----Provides a "comfort zone" for him/her when frightened
----Allows you to get them out of the way when a problem arises
--------Dealing with broken glass, etc.
--------Dealing with children's messes
----Helps with potty training (they won't potty in their crate)
-Potty training
----Take out as soon as they exit the crate
----Use a leash at first (even in a yard)
--------You can keep them from wandering
--------He/she realizes the purpose for going outside
----Use a "key word" (like potty)
----Begin by taking him/her to the same spot
----Keep to a schedule
-Using a baby gate when a Dane is small will teach them
-boundaries even when they are older (baby elephant syndrome)




Food
-We prefer large/giant breed Iams brand food.
----Didn't hurt her stomach
----Easily available
----First ingredient was chicken
----Plenty of calcium; no supplement needed
----Mid-level pricing; coupons available
--------More expensive food could reducing gas, waste size
--------Less expensive food has byproducts and fillers
-Don't feed too much protein; 26% in Iams worked well for us
-Don't over feed
-Keep to a schedule
-Don't exercise him/her 30min before or after you feed
-Dane's are lazy
----Don't require food intake of high-energy dogs
----Layla eats 40lbs of food every 3-3.5 weeks

Exercise
-Don't over exercise
----Great Danes are well known for having hip issues
----Heart failure from over exhaustion can occur
-Danes don't do well in extreme hot and cold
----Not having an undercoat makes it difficult to regulate temp.

MrsDrPoe: Traveling with the Girls

Traveling with the girls is always entertaining. Over the holiday weekend, we went to Starkville to run some errands and visit some friends. We currently have no air conditioning in any of our vehicles, so Layla likes to stick her head out the window:

The girls were all about Grandad this morning. They act like they don't ever get any love.

MrsDrPoe: Another Week Gone By

So nothing much has happened since last Friday, with the exception of last weekend's events. Last Saturday, Jady Copeland came down from NYC to teach at the annual Youth Forum at EH. He went through chapters 1-6 of Zechariah - he made some great connections between the passages and the coming of Christ. Even through we were the oldest folks there, we learned a lot, and we got to meet a lot of younger brothers and sisters. We also attended a graduation celebration for our three high-school senior members.

Afterwards, since we were dressed up with no place to go...we decided to go on a date to Red Robin...

And Ashley Park, where we went into a really cool candy store:

and a store that sold all kinds of teaching material. We found this particular book a bit interesting:

Apparently Little Golden Books finds gouged out eyes too graphic for children.

Sunday we relaxed between services and ate a pretty great meal...
After evening services, Mr. Poe and I ran with a very special friend of ours (more on her later). Snoosh (Sascha) got tired just thinking about running:

MrsDrPoe: Recent Goings On

Good morning! It's Foto Friday here on the blog! Today I have chosen to upload pictures of my fuzzy babies and the progress of two of the Poe family "hobbies." Another disclaimer: I am not a professional photographer (by any stretch of the imagination), but these pictures are all my own. I hope you appreciate the subject more than the artistry behind them ;).

This is Sascha - a long-haired Dachshund and our oldest. She firmly believes that she is a princess and claims to have total authority over the household.
This is Layla - a Great Dane and our youngest. She is just fine with being a follower, and she is always at my side...

Together they make for some pretty hilarious stories!

The first hobby to be discussed today is one of mine - gardening.

I have 2 tomato plants potted on the patio...And they're already producing! I've got 4 green ones so far- definitely the best growing season I've had yet!The rest of the garden consists of 2 green bell pepper plants, a rose bush, sweet basil, cilantro, 1 strawberry plant, oregano and rosemary. Yay!
Completely separate from my efforts is a beautiful purple clematis vine...

And a beautiful flowering cactus!


Now onto Mr. Poe's hobby - cars. We have a 1985 Toyota 1 ton pickup that we got from my parents right before we got married in 2008. It's probably our most reliable vehicle, but it needed a little tlc on the outside. Here are the "before" pix:
