MrsDrPoe: Sarah's Key

It's time for another Reading Review- and this one's not a baby book!  I present to you "Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay:

"Sarah's Key" is actually two tales in one- the story of a modern-day American journalist (Julia Jarmond) who has made her home in France and that of a young Jewish girl (Sarah Starzynski) and the horrors she experienced living through the Vel' d'Hiv roundup of Jewish citizen in France in 1942.  As Julia uncovers more about Sarah and her own family's connection to that dark time in history, she discovers herself and in turn changes her own life forever.

Overall, I enjoyed the story; although, it is very dark and definitely brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions.  Even though the book is a work of fiction, I appreciated the bit of history I learned while reading- I had no prior knowledge of the roundup.  One of my favorite aspects of the book was the growth and development of the relationship of Julia and her father-in-law because of (and perhaps in spite of) his family's past.

I will say that the book did have some language in it, and I didn't appreciate the focus on several of themes that were presented rather nonchalantly (adultery, abortion, cohabitation, etc.).  So while the story itself was very moving, this book will not be sitting on my shelf at home, and I am not over zealous to recommend it.

Holiday Cards from Shutterfly

As you all know, I love, love, LOVE Christmas.  In fact, I'm one of the few people in the world that gets excited about seeing Christmas decorations in stores before Halloween's even arrived.

Whether you think that makes me crazy or not, you have to admit that with still being in school and having our first baby due in less than a month, it only makes sense to start thinking about Christmas now- our gift list, the gift list for our family and friends, the Christmas party, our Christmas cards...

Although I'm still working on the rest of it, I know exactly where I'm getting my cards this year- Shutterfly.   They have a huge selection of cards from traditional to retro to modern and everything in between.  They even have cards that blend your Christmas card with your annual Christmas letter!  AND to top it all off, they have some great special offers going on now and throughout the holiday season (and they're not just on cards!).

For this Foto Friday, I'd like to show you some of my favs:

Since this year's cards are doubling as birth announcements for us, I particularly love the ones with spaces for multiple pictures.

But I wanna know what you think- what are your favorite holiday cards from Shutterfly??

While Shutterfly has sponsored this post, I must say that I have worked with them before and their service is fantastic, as is the quality of their cards and photobooks.  My sister-in-law also recently used Shutterfly for her birth announcements and was quite pleased with her purchase, as well as the large selection of cards available.

MrsDrPoe: On Becoming Babywise

I have another parenting book for this week's Reading Review!  Here's "On Becoming Babywise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep" by Gary Ezzo, M.A. and Robert Bucknam, M.D.

While I can't fully recommend it (yet), I can't WAIT to put the material presented in this book to use!  The "parent directed feeding" (PDF) method seems to be a very logical 'best of both worlds' approach to feeding an infant that also has the benefit of getting the family on a schedule that allows plenty of sleep for all.  You know Mr. Poe and I are all about our sleep.

The book is an easy read, full of tips, tricks, doable goals, and answers to questions and issues that frequently come up.  As you can imagine, there is a LOT of material in this work; I would definitely recommend purchasing the book to keep as a reference (I found several copies at a local thrift store).  A sample schedule outline and baby nourishment tracking charts are included.

I'm also looking forward to reading the second and third installments of the series, and I hope you are too!

MrsDrPoe: Why Is There Dew?

Since I've been spending all my time trying to finish my school work and doing baby things, I haven't had nearly the time I would like to blog faithfully...especially on Thesis Tuesdays!  But I had a special request for today's post- (simply) addressing the question of why there's dew on the ground in the morning.

The answer lies in saturation- a concept that every southerner knows about, even if you don't think you do:

When Mr. Poe and I make sweet tea, we mix in a heaping two cups of sugar.  If we stir in the sugar while the tea is still warm, all of the sugar dissolves in the liquid.  If we wait until after we put ice in the tea to stir in the sugar, we end up with undissolved sugar at the bottom of the pitcher because the tea is saturated- it's full of sugar and won't hold any more at this cooler temperature.

The same is true with the air.  Also as every southerner knows, the air contains water (in gas form); the amount of water in the air at any given time is what we know as humidity.

As the temperature of the air drops at night, the air becomes saturated (just like the tea at a cooler temp), and can't hold the same amount of water as it could before.  This extra water condenses, returning to it's liquid form on the ground as dew.  The next day, when the temperature of the air increases again, the dew evaporates back into the air.

And THAT is why we have dew.

MrsDrPoe: Sign with Your Baby

For the next Reading Review, I present to you "Sign with Your Baby: How to Communicate with Infants Before They Can Speak" by Joseph Garcia:

This book is relatively short and easy to read.  The text portion of the book discusses the immediate and potential future benefits of teaching babies to sign, as well as providing helpful information on timing and techniques of instructing babies.  There's also a very large index of sign vocabulary.

I liked this book so much that I put it on our registry.  While Mr. Poe and I are trying not to get too worked up about the future development benefits of teaching our Poe-tte to sign (we really just want to try to help her communicate her needs/wants earlier), it was very interesting to see all the ways in which this technique has helped children.

Mr. Garcia is obviously very passionate about the subject and has written this book in such a way that seems like teaching babies to sign is very doable, even for people unfamiliar with the language.  I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject, and I'll definitely be posting about our baby signing adventures during the next few years!

MrsDrPoe: Our Anniversary Week

Hello all, and happy Foto Friday!  This week Mr. Poe and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary.  Since we were also at 26 weeks with our Poe-ette, I took a special baby bump picture:

yes...I can still fit in my wedding dress.  Yay for empire waists!  We also found a great deal on a small table to finish off our entryway decor:

I can't wait to see what the end of the week will bring!

MrsDrPoe: The Fleet Street Murders

The most recent book club book I've had the pleasure of reading is "The Fleet Street Murders" by Charles Finch:

I love a good mystery, and since I haven't read a new one in years, this one took me right back to my childhood days of curling up in bed with a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys adventure.

"The Fleet Street Murders" did not disappoint; in fact, I couldn't put it down.  While it's the third installment in Finch's series about the amateur sleuth, Charles Lenox, the book is very capable of standing alone.  The late 1800's English setting was an interesting and enjoyable backdrop for the story; I appreciated that a few of the restaurants mentioned actually exist.  The plot keeps you guessing, and at the end everything is resolved quickly.

There is a very small bit of language in the book (if I remember correctly), which it could've done without.  Also not having read the previous two works in the series, I can't tell you if any of the information present in them would add more to the development of the characters in this book.  Even so, I would definitely recommend "The Fleet Street Murders," and I am looking forward to being able to read more of the adventures of Charles Lenox.

MrsDrPoe: Noah's Ark

Since we painted virtually the entire house immediately after we bought it (and almost every room is a neutral color), we decided that we were tired of painting.  Our new girl would have a tan room with a Noah's Ark theme because that would be easy, fun, and based on the Bible.  To help decorate the walls, I asked my grandmother to paint some animals two-by-two for the room, and here's what she came up with:

camels, elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, and doves (they're out of the picture).  How fun!  And they look so real!  The room is slowly coming together...yesterday I even put on the lovely Noah's Ark sheets that the Barclays gave us.

MrsDrPoe: Fried Rice

What's for dinner this Wednesday is a protein packed, meatless dish that is perfect for using up stuff you have around the house: friend rice.

Ingredients: 1 cup rice, 2 cups water, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup cashews, 2 carrots, 1/4 cup green beans, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1 tablespoon ginger, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder.

While the rice is cooking in the water (and a splash of soy sauce), chop the veggies and nuts, and saute in a wok or skillet with the seasonings and soy sauce:

After they're slightly tender, push the veggies to the sides of the pan and scramble the eggs in the center:

Add the cooked rice, stir to combine, and serve:

MrsDrPoe: Hand-Me-Downs for My Baby Girl

This Foto Friday I'd like to share with you something very special to me.  As you may or may not know, I'm a rather sentimental person.  I love that our guests sleep in a bed that used to belong to Mr. Poe's grandmother and that our toddler(s) will sleep in a bed my granddad made for my dad that I slept in as a little girl.  And now that we know we're having a little girl, I'm especially excited to be giving her:

a Raggedy Ann doll given to me by a very dear aunt, a bear given to me when I was born, the jewelry box I used for twenty-ish years, and the tea set and rocking chair I had as a little girl.

I hope she gets as much enjoyment out of these things as I have; I just can't wait to share them with her!

MrsDrPoe: To Kill a Mockingbird

For the next Reading Review, I present the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee:

I had read this book before in school, but it was nice to have the opportunity to read it again and get an adult perspective on the book.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is well written and a great read.  It captures the attitude of the time and the spirit of childhood perfectly.  The unique plot holds the readers attention, and the grammar school aged narrator provides humor at times and a unique vantage point that makes people of all ages able to identify with various aspects of the story.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was reminded again of why it is a timeless classic.

MrsDrPoe: "If You're Worried and You Can't Sleep...

...just count your blessings instead of sheep, and you'll fall asleep counting your blessings." - Bing Crosby

Today's Foto Friday post is all about those blessings we've received recently.  As you probably know, Mr. Poe and I are having a baby.  Yesterday at 20 weeks, we found out we're having a little girl!  From the ultrasound, it seems that everything is going well and growing as it should (praise God!):

This week we also got our new fridge and dishwasher installed:

It'll be so nice to not have to wonder about the food we're eating anymore, and I know I'll be extra thankful for a working dishwasher when the baby comes!

These recent blessings have been so wonderful, and we are so thankful!!

MrsDrPoe: Jesus as a Role Model for Dads

For this Theology Thursday, I'd like to share with you a great lesson about Jesus from Mr. Maxson.  In honor of Father's Day last Sunday, he presented Jesus in a slightly different light- as a role model for dads- focusing on how He always put Himself second during His time on this earth.  Don't feel like there's no point in listening if you're not a dad though; since we're all called to be servants, this a great lesson for everyone.  You can find it online here.

MrsDrPoe: Unexpected Thanks

This Foto Friday is not for the faint of heart.  This is Layla's mess that I had to deal with right after breakfast:

This is by far the worst dog mess I've ever had to clean up, but today I was thinking that all these messes are just prepping us for having children.  So, although I never imagined I'd say it, thanks for the messes, Layla and Sasch.

MrsDrPoe: Chunky Summer Spaghetti

What's for dinner this Wednesday is a fantastic dish for this time of year...chunky summer spaghetti.

MrsDrPoe: Baby Things

Good morning, and happy Foto Friday!  Today I'd like to share some of our new baby things that Mr. Poe and I are pretty excited about.

Mama and Papa Poe largely contributed to this lovely 4 in 1 crib and changing table set that we found on craigslist for a steal (barely used!):

And my sis-in-law, Mrs. Brodrecht, who's about 7 weeks ahead of us, told me about a great deal on baby slings here (enter the code CCMother and get a sling for the cost of shipping).  Mine arrived this week, so of course I tested it on Sascha:

She was not a fan, and 'said' as she often does, "It's tough to be small!"

MrsDrPoe: Apple Sauce

It's another What's for Dinner Wednesday where dessert is on the menu!  As I shared last week, we received a baby food maker as a gift.  So, even though it'll be a while before I use it regularly, I wanted to try it out.  Here's my take on apple sauce...made in the baby food maker but fit for any adult!

Ingredients: 1 apple (cored and split in at least 8 pieces), water, and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.

Steam the apple slices according to baby food steamer directions (or using a steamer and saucepan on the stove top):

Drain the water from the steamer (or transfer to a small food processor), add cinnamon, and puree until the apple sauce reaches the desired consistency.  Enjoy!

MrsDrPoe: What to Eat When You're Expecting

I've been holding this review back for a little while until the big reveal that we're pregnant, but now that you know, I can share "What to Eat When You're Expecting" by Eisenberg, Murkoff, and Hathaway:

Although it's been recently replaced by "What to Expect: Eating Well When You're Expecting," I couldn't turn down purchasing it when it showed up at my local thrift store, and after reading it, I was glad to own a copy.

This book includes information on what you should eat, what you shouldn't eat, as well as what eating/not eating these certain things will do for the health of your baby.  There's even a section included for suggested diet and caloric variations while nursing AND 100 recipes that help you put the book's teachings into practice.

You may be asking, do I follow the best odds diet proposed in the book to the T...and I would have to answer no.  But I do feel a lot more comfortable about making my food choices, knowing more about amounts of nutrients I should be eating, portion sizes, and such.

The only thing I really didn't like about the book was the introduction of the first chapter, which basically discounts any input God has on what issues a baby may or may not be born with, instead suggesting that eating well will guarantee you a healthy baby.  Ironically, however, even the name of the diet ("Best odds") suggests that even the authors believe that statistically, even if you do everything right, you can't totally control the health of your baby.

All things considered, I would recommend this book to any woman expecting.

MrsDrPoe: Our Mother's Day Surprise

It's another Foto Friday on the blog!  As you know, Sunday is Mother's day, but since we're having the youth forum this weekend, we had to go visit our parents last weekend to give them our Mother's day surprise...

That's right!  Mr. Poe and I are pregnant!  Yesterday was 14 weeks.  Here's the Poe-let at 8 weeks:

We were so happy to be able to tell most of our immediate family in person, and everyone is just as excited as we are!  We even got our first presents...a baby food maker and money toward a crib...

We are so tremendously blessed, and so extremely thankful!

MrsDrPoe: Paul Earnheart

It's another Theology Thursday on the blog, and today I'd like to invite you all to a very special weekend event here, our semi-annual youth forum.

Paul Earnheart will be speaking this year, and the setup is a bit different.  Friday night at 7:30, he will be giving a lesson to older folks about raising children.  Saturday there will be various lessons geared toward young people at 10, 11, 1:30, and 2:30.

I encourage everyone who can join us to do so, and if you can't, check here for a live broadcast or to listen after this weekend.

MrsDrPoe: A Special McDonalds Treat

I'm not sure if I'm cheating or not for this What's for Dinner Wednesday...or maybe I cheat every other Wednesday...

It's actually easier for Mr. Poe and I to eat out on Wednesday nights.  Tonight, we went out to McDonald's to try their Cherry Berry Chiller, a new fruit slushy made from 100% fruit juice and on sale for $1 through Saturday.

The slush is AMAZING, and you should all go and try it before the price goes up (if they're having this promotion in your area)!

MrsDrPoe: Ms. Coronado

It's time for another edition of Poe's Pals!  Today I'd like to introduce to you, Ms. Coronado*:

We've known Ms. Coronado for just over a year now, and our lives are much more full of energy because of that.  A high school teacher and JV volleyball coach, she's super peppy and outgoing.  Ms. Coronado's fluent in English, Spanish, and French, enjoys fashion and all things girly, and loves the Lord (her dad actually preaches for the Spanish congregation that meets at Embry Hills).

Ms. Coronado is always up for hanging out, even if her busy schedule often forces her to change her plans (like that time she organized dinner at Ihop and then couldn't come *wink*).  We love her very much and are so thankful to have her in our lives!

MrsDrPoe: A Lovely Tradition

Around this time every year, the graduating senior guys are asked to present a lesson to the congregation before they go off to college.  I think this is a fantastic tradition and that the guys this year had some fantastic thoughts.  So for this Theology Thursday, I invite you all to open up your Bibles with me and listen to lessons on Psalm 39, 32, 15, and 107 here.

MrsDrPoe: Fruity Grilled Cheese

It's another edition of What's for Dinner Wednesday, and tonight I have another recipe from the kitchen of Mrs. Luke- fruity grilled cheese.

Ingredients: cheese to taste (we used American, but she assures me Cheddar's better), 2 slices of bread, 2 tablespoons blueberry jam, 2 tablespoons softened butter.

Butter each slice of bread on a single side, and place buttered sides together (in order to assemble without getting butter everywhere).  Spread the jam on the top non-buttered bread side, then layer the cheese on top.

Remove the bottom piece of bread and place buttered side up on top of the sandwich.  Put the sandwich in a small sauce pan over med heat.  Cook, flipping once, until cheese is melted and outsides are golden brown (about 8 minutes).  Enjoy!

MrsDrPoe: Unexpected Book Source

Instead of reviewing a specific book this week, I'd like to show you several:

and recommend the Dollar Tree as an unexpected source of fantastic Bible books for children of all ages!  At a dollar apiece for Biblically accurate material, it's very hard to beat!

MrsDrPoe: Sloppy Joes

This What's for Dinner Wednesday, we're having one of Mr. Poe's favorite (non-Mexican) dishes...Sloppy Joe's.

Ingredients:1/4 pound of ground beef, 1/2 bell pepper, 1/8 onion, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/8 cup mustard, salt and pepper to taste, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon chili powder.

Finely dice veggies and place in a medium saucepan with the ground beef.  Cook over med-high heat until the veggies are tender and the meat is fully cooked (about 15 minutes):

Add remaining ingredients, and simmer over med-low heat to combine the flavors and to call your husband in from playing basketball (5-10 minutes).

Serve on a bun and enjoy!

MrsDrPoe: Mr. Gates

It's time for another edition of Poes' Pals!  Today I'd like you all to meet a very special person, Mr. Gates:

We've known Mr. Gates for about a year, and in that time he has been such an encouragement to us!  He truly lives for the Lord- a truth that is evident even during his most physically difficult times.

Despite spending his entire life with an extremely rare heart defect, this Temple grad has had his artwork shown in Rome, Berlin, and New York (to name a few).  He has spent the past six months hospitalized in Florida waiting on a heart that will not be rejected by his body.  During this long, painful period, however, he has spent a good deal of his time speaking to others in the hospital about the gospel.

Mr. Poe and I would encourage you to keep Mr. Gates and his family in your prayers.  If you'd like to learn more about Mr. Gates, his condition, and what you can do to help, you may do so here.

MrsDrPoe: Building a Better Pie Crust

I have a special treat for you this What's for Dinner Wednesday.  My latest tip for a better pie crust!

*replace the flour in your recipe with self-rising flour*

This makes a puffier, never tough crust for pies, galettes, quiches, and more.  Enjoy one tonight!

MrsDrPoe: Constantly Craving

The next book I would like to present to you for a Reading Review is another one that I received free from BookSneeze, "Constantly Craving: How to Make Sense of Always Wanting More" by Marilyn Meberg:

In this book, Meberg addresses several areas where people often crave more- romance, contentment, friendship, time, meaning, etc.  She identifies with each situation by telling of her own experiences and suggests how universal these things are.  Ultimately she also identifies humanity's cravings for various earthly things with actual craving for God and heaven.

I mildly enjoyed the book.  I believe many inspirational quotes could be drawn from it, and parts are very encouraging to readers.  The use of personal experiences made it seem like Meberg was sitting next to me giving advice; although, this technique also made the book drag in places.  For anyone remotely familiar with Christianity, this book doesn't present anything new, but it does serve as a reminder that our "hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness."*

I would recommend this book to a reader looking for encouragement from such a reminder.  However, I would also caution him/her that many of the views presented by Meberg are not consistent with those presented in the Bible.

*From the hymn My Hope is Built on Nothing Less.

MrsDrPoe: Acts 29, Part 2

It's another Theology Thursday, and today we'll be continuing the series of lessons on "Acts 29" that we started last week.  As usual, I invite you to open your Bibles and to join me in studying Acts 29, Part 2.

MrsDrPoe: Sausage Sandwiches

What's for Dinner this Wednesday is a special treat that we only get when I come across a great deal on sausages...sausage sandwiches.

Ingredients: Sausages, 1/8 onion (sliced), 1/2 bell pepper (sliced), buns.

In a medium skillet over med-high heat, cook the sausages and sliced veggies until the onions are caramelized, meat is warm, and the peppers are softened (about 15 minutes).

Place the sausage in a bun and layer some cooked veggies over it and enjoy:

This time I found turkey sausage on sale...less fat but still pretty tasty!

MrsDrPoe: Mr. Morgan

It's time for another edition of Poes' Pals!  Today I'd like to introduce you to another of our friends from the big city, Mr. Morgan:

A fantastic graphic designer, Mr. Morgan graduated from the Creative Circus in December and has since been working for several companies and organizations on various projects.  His artistic talent, however, is not what he's best known for- it is his focus on spiritual things.  While in school, Mr. Morgan frequently sacrificed sleep in order to attend and help with Bible studies, as well as to spend time encouraging others- things he continues to spend his time and efforts doing.

Mr. Poe and I appreciate Mr. Morgan's attitude and example so much, and we are so thankful to have him in our lives!
